Edexcel (BTEC)
HND is a level-5 qualification (equivalent to the second year of a UK bachelor’s degree). There is an embedded level-4 exit qualification the HNC
Upon successful completion of the HND Higher National Diploma course the student will have completed at least 240 credits. On completion of Higher National Certificate (HNC) the student will have completed at least 120 credits.
Classroom Learning 15 to 21 hours per week
Day time and Evening study options available
The HNC is a level-4 qualification delivered over one year. The HNC is an embedded component of the HND, however, it can be taken as a stand- alone qualification. If a student opts to take the HNC the student would be eligible for a HNC after successful completion of a minimum of 8 modules. The Modules selected for the course are found on the application form.
The HND is a level-5 qualification delivered over two years, the first year at level 4 and the second year at level-5. If a student opts to take the HND, the student would be eligible for a Higher National Diploma after successful completion of a minimum of 15 modules. The Modules selected for the course are found on the application form.
Students are required to maintain their attendance at the required level at all times
We recommend an average of 10-12 hours of home study per week for this programme.
Work will be checked by lecturers on regular basis and feedback provided for improvements.
Students at end of term to hand in the required number of assignments. Have attendance on all the subjects and feedback from their lecturers
Student achievement in assessment in all units is graded as ‘pass’ ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. The assessments are tested with assignments and presentations. The students’ work is marked internally by the college An external verifier checks procedures and results.
Assignments are scheduled for collection – June and December every year.
Conditions for the Award
To achieve a Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma qualification a student must have:
- completed units equivalent to 120 credits at level 5;
- achieved at least a pass in 105 credits at level 5;
- completed units equivalent to 120 credits at level 4;
- achieved at least a pass in 105 credits at level 4.
To achieve a Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate qualification a student must have:
- completed units equivalent to 120 credits at level 4;
- achieved at least a pass in 105 credits at level 4.
Compensation Provisions for the HND
A student can still be awarded an HND if they have not achieved a minimum of a Pass in one of the 15 credit units at Level 4 and one of the 15 credit units at Level 5 but they have otherwise fulfilled all the above conditions.

A student can still be awarded an HNC if they have not achieved a minimum of a Pass in one of the 15 credit units but they have otherwise fulfilled all the above conditions.
The calculation of the overall qualification grade is based on the student’s performance in all units to the value of 120 credits. Students are awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction qualification grade using the points gained through all 120 credits, at Level 4 for the HNC or Level 5 for the HND, based on unit achievement.
- All units in valid combination must be attempted (120 credits)
- At least 105 credits must be Pass or above
- All 120 credits count in calculating the grade
The overall qualification grade is calculated in the same way for the HNC and for the HND.
The calculation of the overall qualification grade is based on the student’s performance in all units to the value of 240 credits.
Students are awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction qualification grade HND.
The Curriculum for BTEC includes a compulsory weekly lecture English Development lecture offered to all students in addition to the four subjects they will study that term
This extra support lecture provides Student’s with careers guidance as well as any additional support students may need in their English and planning for their higher education.
BTEC students will have access to the student portal. This has a list of library books they can borrow and where they can find other relevant course material.
End of course students must be in contact with the college. Students must ensure the college has their correct contact details at all times.
How is the course assessed?
Coursework and continual assessment, there are no external exams although you may sometimes have in class tests, presentations, role play.

Processes are in place to collect information and be used to make improvements to support student needs. LBBA is known to put student concerns foremost and student representatives can help in this process.
Higher-level skills
Learners studying for Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Business will be expected to develop the following skills during the program of study:
- Cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis through scenario questions and mini case studies.
- Effective problem solving and decision making using appropriate quantitative and qualitative skills including identifying, formulating and solving business problems
- Effective communication, oral and in writing, using a range of media widely used in business e.g. the preparation and presentation of business reports, class presentations.
- Numerical and quantitative skills including data analysis, interpretation and extrapolation; the use of models of business problems and phenomena
- Effective use of communication and information technology for business applications
- Effective self-management in terms of time, planning, motivation, self-starting, individual initiative and enterprise
- Developing an appropriate learning style through effective teaching.
- Self-awareness, openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people, cultures, business and management issues, through class debates.
- Effective performance within a team environment including leadership, team-building, influencing and project-management skills
- Interpersonal skills of effective listening, negotiating, persuading and presentation, through group work and role play.
- Abilities to conduct research into business and management issues.
Support and regular feedback will be provided to students to achieve these skills. Students that need personalized learning plans will be advised by the Director Of Studies.
Where does it lead?
The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in business, which students can build on should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows students to specialize by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study.
On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, students can develop their careers in the business sector through:

Entry Requirements
For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business
- A GE advanced level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A to C (or equivalent)
- Other related Level 3 qualifications
- An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
- Related work experience
- English Requirements – IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4 or 5 qualification level B2
